Harvest Church was established under the guidance of God's Holy Spirit, with a small group of believers in the year 1976 here in Charlotte, North Carolina. We have endeavored together to continue to follow His leading ever since. His rewards have been rich indeed as we have grown through the laying of the foundation, the building of the superstructure, and the moving into the place of holy habitation. Our Heavenly Father is preparing and performing a great work amongst those whose hearts are truly His.
A little history.....
Harvest Church began as a Bible study group and prayer meeting group in the home of Pastors Ed and Joann Chidester. In June of 1976 regular weekly meetings were begun as family, friends and acquaintances throughout the city joined together for study and prayer. As the months progressed, God began to knit us together - we became a large family. We shared a common desire for study, prayer, worship and fellowship. We enjoyed this closeness - it was a comfortable feeling. Many of us liked things just the way they were; small, uncomplicated and close. God spoke that we had become a cluster to ourselves. Would we remain a cluster and dry on the vine? No, we became willing to be put through God's winepress that He might make of us life-giving nourishment for others. It was time for a change. God was calling us to be in-gatherers of His harvest.
"Where there is no vision the people perish." God wanted to increase us, to broaden us , to give us new vision - a vision of outreach. By His word God spoke Harvest Church into existence. As a small group of ten families, we committed ourselves to follow the direction of God. Just as we had given ourselves to each other, we now became willing to give ourselves to the people of Charlotte, our nation, and some day the world. In 1978 Harvest became a church.
Over the past 39 years, (three new sanctuaries and 200 members strong) we have seen the hand of God prove Himself faithful. Our hands have been serving in the areas of prison and jail ministries, nursing home outreach, serving the needy with food and clothing, ministering to those plagued with addictions and many others at home mission projects. From the beginning God has enabled us to reach out beyond these United States. Whether it has been to 'lend a helping hand', give monies, send a team of adults to build homes or sending our own church family to the foreign field, we have been a part of sharing the 'good news' to the nations of the world. We currently support missions in Brazil and Honduras.
We believe and attempt to fulfill what Jesus has equipped the church to do...to preach the gospel through the word and our means. It is our heart's desire to fulfill the great commission and to hear Jesus say, "I was an hungered, and you gave me meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in: naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came unto me." Matthew 25:35-36
